Abilities

Character's Canon Abilities:
Ayanami is hailed as an exceptionally brilliant strategist, and is the mastermind of most of the military plans in the Barsburg Empire. Off the battlefield, his cunning allowed him to rise in the military ranks quickly. He is very perceptive and able to exploit his opponents' weaknesses, whether it be in a military strategy or in combat. As a tactician, his plans tend to be very thoroughly thought out with fallbacks in case things go awry. He's also noted to be extremely patient, perfectly willing to wait years for the perfect opportunity to execute his treacheries.

Ayanami is a powerful and skilled wielder of Zaiphon, a type of magic in his universe which allows the conversion of mana (life energy, such as that which souls are believed to be made of) into various forms of energy. Usually Zaiphon appears as a glowing blue assembly of ancient letters inscribed in the air, but Ayanami's is red due to his being a Warsfeil (explained later). There are three types of Zaiphon: Attacking, Healing, and Manipulation, and Ayanami has shown the ability to use both Attacking and Healing Zaiphon. Attacking Zaiphon is a combat type which allows for both offensive attacks and defensive barriers. Healing Zaiphon, as the name suggests, is able to heal wounds, even to the point of regeneration of limbs if the wielder is skilled and strong enough. There is no evidence yet of Ayanami being able to use Manipulation Zaiphon. Ayanami is acknowledged as the strongest wielder of Zaiphon among the Black Hawks, which he is the leader of, able to rip apart Antwort's (Antwort is a nation!) defensive barriers with a single attack.

On top of being gifted with Zaiphon, Ayanami is a Warsfeil, which is the reason his Zaiphon appears red instead of blue. Warsfeil can be created by another Warsfeil, but Ayanami was born as one and inherited the gene; it is believed that those who are born Warsfeil are stronger than those who are created. On top of being able to control Zaiphon, Warsfeil have the ability to control Wars, which is tainted mana. This type of ability manifests in many forms, such as snaring tendrils or spheres of explosive destruction or even as a means of teleportation. Warsfeil are feared for their destructive power and unnatural--even immortal--resilience. It is also rumored that they feed on human souls.

While Ayanami rarely enters combat without the use of Zaiphon, it is implied that he is an able swordsman. He wields a slender military sword with confidence and ease, and has been shown to 'test' his subordinates' reactions by attacking them with it. He also carries a whip, and seems to favor it over his sword, and is capable of deadly accuracy with it even at a distance and on the move.

Lastly, as the reincarnation of Verloren, he has some of the abilities of the God of Death, though he cannot use them to their full potential as he is in a human vessel. Verloren had the combined abilities of the seven ghosts who sealed him and took his place, but at this point in cannon, he is limited to only a few of them. He can possess souls via a contract, but can only possess half the soul (Vertrag's power). He can also use Fest's ability to bind souls. In the latest chapters it is revealed Ayanami can suppress memories.

Weapons:
A military rapier and his whip are his two physical weapons. He can channel his Zaiphon through them.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History:
http://07ghost.wikia.com/wiki/Ayanami
Point in Canon: Ch. 75
Ayanami and co. continue to have Teito believe he is Ayanami's Begleiter. Ayanami is in the process of killing off his higher ups in order to gain military authority on the fate of the Eye of Mikhail.
Character Personality:
As Ayanami:
Ayanami is obsessively dedicated to his country and his profession. Nationalism is the primary motive for his actions, even after Verloren's soul began to interfere with his motives more and more. As such, he is very respectful of people who shares his views and dedication to their country and are willing to make sacrifices for their country, as shown when he admired Bastien for living his country of Barsburg more than anything. However, while he loves his country, he may not love his superiors. He does not go out of his way to impress the higher ups, yet quick to defend his family's honor if mocked. It must be noted however that he is always polite and unemotional when addressing others, no matter what his personal opinions of them. To his opponents, he is merciless; killing, threatening, and torturing where he saw fit, all for the sake of his beloved country. However, despite his mercilessness towards his enemies, it is implied he does not harm innocents.

Ayanami is equally obsessive about work. It is mentioned that he sleeps only three hours a day but can function better than anyone else in spite of it. He's tidy and organized, even to the point of sorting his garbage. Major Hyuuga seems to be the only one who can get away (marginally) with distracting him from work. Beneath his businesslike demeanor, he is calculating and manipulative, and very very patient with his secret agendas.

In all appearances Ayanami is very level headed. As the best strategist and Chief of Staff for the Barsburg Empire, he maintains a professional unemotional demeanor to everyone. On occasion, he allows his temper to show more openly towards his Black Hawks.

Despite his apparent indifference, Ayanami cares deeply for his closest subordinates, the Black Hawks. All of them except one have given Ayanami half of their soul, and they are linked to him through telepathy. Additionally, when Ayanami is holding one of their souls, he takes the same injuries they do in battle (this ability doesn't work in reverse). He would unhesitatingly put himself in the line of fire to protect the Black Hawks, and would never abandon one of them even if it puts him in risky situations. Also, he is very aware and sensitive to the Black Hawks' feelings, always concerned for their well-being and happiness even above his own, and comforting them when they are unhappy. It seems however that he is in denial of his own caring side, since when Hyuuga teased him about caring, he promptly told Hyuuga to go die. It is possible that he is hesitant about bonding further with his subordinates because of how emotionally devastated he was when he lost his first Begleiter Yukikaze, who gave his life to protect Ayanami.

As Verloren:
Although he is the reincarnation of Verloren, Ayanami's personality is quite distinct from the God of Death. When Verloren is the dominant personality, he becomes uncharacteristically eccentric and manic. He becomes prone to grinning and twitching, and very impulsive in actions as opposed to Ayanami's calm and calculated methods. Verloren's insanity clashes against Ayanami's, and Hyuuga once commented that Ayanami sometimes cannot sleep because of Verloren's nightmares.

Verloren's soul influences Ayanami's motivations, causing him to do things his past self wouldn't do. Ayanami would not have assassinated military staff for political power, because the loss of so many military leaders weakens the country. However, because of Verloren's agenda, Ayanami kills his superiors in order to secure control over the military decisions over the Eye of Mikhail, which is of particular interest to Verloren.

When Verloren was still in God's good graces, he fell in love with Eve, and he still loves her to this day. Eve is a sensitive topic to him, and he becomes easily agitated when other people point out he can't ever have her again.

Character Plans:
He will most likely try to make connections with SERO and/or the more military factions of SP. If/When he catches wind of Teito being on the island he may try to influence SERO to help him study the Eye of Mikhail and Teito.

First Person Sample
[How.......annoying. And inconvenient.

That is, it is annoying and inconvenient to be yanked into another dimension when there was quite a bit of work to do in one's own world. The smallest wrinkle of irritation creased Ayanami's brow as he muses over how untimely it was for him to be here now of all times, right when all his plans were set in motion in Barsburg. But he suppresses such outward expression of thoughts quickly, and the shadow of his military hat obscures the telltale signs anyways.

No, if anything is bothering this uniformed gentleman, it does not show. The NV feed is centered on his very neutral expression, the angle suggesting that the device is propped on a desk.]

I've been informed that the duration of my stay at Siren's Port is determined by the arbitrary whim of a force no one comletely understands. No words can describe the inconvenience this causes me, but I imagine I can't be alone in that respect. [A small polite smile curls at the corners of his lips.]

However idleness accomplishes nothing. I have a few talents I'm sure at least someone would find useful, particularly in the military field. Perhaps such a party would like to contact me, and we can find a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Third Person Sample

The object that crashed into the middle of the baseball diamond was certainly not a man, at least not by appearance. It was a pure black sphere, and its landing raised a rather large dust cloud. Which was why it was difficult to see when the sphere split at the top into tendrils, almost like a black flower, and snaked their way into the ground and disappeared.

By the time the dust settled, there was a tall uniformed man standing in the small crater the sphere had created. He took a measured sweep of his surroundings with his gaze. Though a sword hung at his belt, he made no indication of attempting to draw it...for now. Surely Ayanami was bewildered and on guard, but steel is not the best or most dangerous of his weapons.

Hyuuga, report in, he commanded telepathically. No one answered. Which was troublesome, because there was no distance limit to the telepathic connection he has with his Black Hawks, and the fact that Major Hyuuga chose not to reply meant he was either unconscious--which is so unlikely that Ayanami dismissed it--or he was no longer in the same world.

"How troublesome," muttered Ayanami.
